Tagbanua – Indigenous People of Palawan
What happens when an already very unknown indigenous tribe is threatened with extinction and with them their traditions and culture? The future of the Tagbanua is uncertain. They can still make a living from their traditional fishing, agriculture and harvesting edible bird nests. But the question is; for how long? Their way of life no longer fits into the modern world and is increasingly endangered by immigration, discrimination, climate change and destruction of their natural resources.
Despite the odds the Tagbanua try to bring their culture unscathed into the future and find a balance between retaining their tradition and adaptation to new challenges. We only hope that in this process not too much of their traditional way of life is lost.
Over a period of 10 years, the film team follows one of the oldest tribes in the Philippines and documents their traditional way of life. The film shows, in a personal perspective, how the Tagbanua deal with the challenges of modern times and fight for recognition of their rights. It is a contemporary document which captures the traditional Tagbanua way of life and simultaneously serves as an homage to this resilient indigenous tribe.
The high-quality video material shows magnificent landscapes under and above water, exciting reportage-like film sequences and rare shots of the daily life of the Tagbanua. What makes this film unique, is the filmmaker’s alternative approach, which takes the viewer by the hand so to speak, and immerses him in the events and exciting adventures. He gets to know this remarkable ancient people in an almost personal way. The aim of the filmmaker is to give the viewer the impression of value and to make it clear to him that he sees something very special in the world of the Tagbanua.
Tagbanua – Ureinwohner Palawans
Was passiert, wenn ein ohnehin sehr unbekanntes indigenes Volk vom Aussterben bedroht ist und mit ihm seine Traditionen und Kultur? Die Zukunft der Tagbanua ist ungewiss. Noch können sie von ihrem traditionellen Fischfang, Ackerbau und der Ernte von essbaren Vogelnestern leben; aber wie lange noch? Ihre Lebensweise passt nicht mehr in die heutige moderne Welt und wird mehr und mehr durch Immigration, Diskriminierung, Klimawandel und Zerstörung ihrer natürlichen Ressourcen bedroht.
Da sich das Urvolk im Wandel der Zeit befindet, versuchen die Tagbanua, ihre Kultur unbeschadet in die Zukunft zu führen und eine Balance zwischen Erhalt ihrer Tradition und Veränderung zu finden. Zu hoffen ist, dass hierbei nicht zu viel ihrer traditionellen Lebensweise verloren geht.
Über einen Zeitraum von 10 Jahren begleitet das Filmteam eines der ältesten Völker auf den Philippinen und dokumentiert ihre traditionelle Lebensweise. Der Film stellt in einer persönlichen Perspektive dar, wie die Tagbanua mit den Herausforderungen der modernen Zeit umgehen und für die Anerkennung ihrer Rechte kämpfen. Er hält die traditionelle Lebensweise als Zeitdokument für die Tagbanua fest und soll zugleich eine Hommage an dieses robuste indigene Volk sein.
Das hochwertige Videomaterial zeigt großartige Landschaften unter und über Wasser, spannende reportageartige Filmsequenzen und seltene Aufnahmen des täglichen Lebens der Tagbanua. Was diesen Film einzigartig macht, ist die alternative Herangehensweise der Filmemacherin, den Zuschauer sozusagen an die Hand zu nehmen, um mit ihm in die Geschehnisse einzutauchen und gemeinsam spannende Abenteuer zu erleben. Dabei lernt er dieses bemerkenswerte Urvolk auf eine fast persönliche Weise kennen. Ziel ist es, dem Zuschauer den Eindruck von Wertigkeit zu vermitteln und ihm auch auf der Bildebene deutlich zu machen, dass er mit der Welt der Tagbanua etwas ganz Besonderes sieht.

Typhoon Haiyan – The Aftermath
On November 8, 2013 super-typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) hits the Philippines. The city of Tacloban was totally destroyed by winds and giant waves. It received full attention by international news and aid organisations, unlike the remote islands around northern Palawan, the homeland of the Tagbanua. Thousands lost their homes, many were starving and waiting for outside help.
In the 1920’s the Tagbanua experienced a similar disaster, but then they still understood the forces of nature and were not frightened. They were prepared for whatever was coming to them. It is the wish of Chairman Alfremo Carpiano that the tribe should regain this attitude and not only rely on outside help, but proudly stand on their own feet.
